*The Humanitarian Award recognizes excellence in dog care and is selected through a point system utilized by the professional veterinarians that work on the trail.  The Sportsmanship Award is voted upon by the mushers themselves.  The Golden Harness Award is also voted upon by the mushers.  At the time that Red Dog won this award, it had never been awarded to any lead dog other than the winning team's leader.
