Some of the great ways our sponsors help our team include the custom sewing projects that Mickey's Custom Sewing, of Kasilof, Alaska provides. Mickey's talented projects include an innovative redesign of the sleeping bag Paul carried on the trail in the 2007 Iditarod. The sleeping bags are mandatory race gear, so Paul worked with Mickey to modify the bag to make arm holes and actual legs within the bag its self. Quite literally, Paul can now WEAR his bag while he is mushing. While he may look like the "Pillsbury Dough Boy", the functionality of this allows him to be warm and toasty in extreme cold, as well as affording him quick movement when he is resting with the team and needs to tend to a dog. The handwarmers supplied by Grabber are one thing Paul would never leave a checkpoint without. Not only does he utilize the warmers for his hands, he is extremely pleased with the benefits of the insole foot warmers. Paul was born with a spinal defect, and few people know the excruciating back pain he often suffers from. He has found the insoles made by Grabber are an amazing resource in minimizing the discomfort he has. He also uses the handwarmers on specially designed dog jackets to keep his dogs comfortable as well. Finally, the warmers help in keeping his footointments and beverages from freezing!
Out on the trail, Blockbuster Video has made sure that Paul has plenty of fuel to run on. By providing the trail snacks and juices he consumes, he is able to maximize the time he spends caring for the dogs during his rests, and eat much of his food while he is traveling down the trail. He loves peanuts, and will send bags of these to every checkpoint in snack bags. The Capri Sun juices that Blockbuster provides are probably one of the single most important things Paul has in his control to reduce the risk of hypothermia. By maintaining a dedicated schedule of drinking one of these juices for every ten miles of trail he covers, he keeps his body hydrated. Hydration is critical when you are out in the cold.
Having a team that is hydrated is equally as important as having a musher that is hydrated. Thanks to "Hydrolyte", we are able to keep our team extremely hydrated with this electrolite supplement. The dogs really love the flavor, and Paul uses this throughout the training season. Another excellent source of keeping our canine athletes nutritionally complete comes from the vitamin supplements from Fit Dog Nutrition/ Equine Direct.
Paul knows this applies to the dogs as well, and with the financial support of sponsors like Columbia Paint and Coatings, he is able to ship out the gear the dogs will need. Momentum Premium Athletic Dog Food fuels our team. Spenard Builder's Supply has been a long time sponsor, and is key to the building materials Paul uses to craft his sleds and the dog houses for the kennel and dog truck. The warm gloves they provide also serve to allow Paul to have dry gloves at each checkpoint, and to not have to waste precious time during the race trying to dry out his gloves to keep going. Craig Taylor Equipment company provides the use of equipment to keep our dog kennel and trails in great order. Fulton Auto Body works with Paul on everything from custom drags to smooth our training trails to the dog boxes used to transport our team. Paul's Dog Truck also benefits from the oil changes provided by Jiffy Lube Alaska. Nick's Iron Works in Kenai, Alaska has been great about customizing sled components for Paul such as the lightweight snow hooks, cookers, and innovative removable brackets that Paul uses to hold his sit down seat on his sleds. Countryside Art Gallery in Minnesota has created memorable paintings that allow us to cherish our beloved canine athletes. Paul's favorite food on the trail is hands down, a cheeseburger from McDonalds.
The financial support of these sponsors as well as Udelhoven Oilfield System Services, Norville Investments - Allan and Alfie Norville, Carol and George Figdore, Dale and Barbara Trombley, Dr. Andrea Resciniti, Jim and Linda Schwanke, Bill Petrell and the many members of the "Morning View Kennel Booster Club" all make our program a success.
Once again in the 2010 Iditarod, booties made by Lisa Davis from Ohio will be worn by our team. Lisa rode with Paul in the 2009 Ceremonial Start of the race as his official "IditaRider"!
